Habit: shrub
Description: "Shrub, 10-18 inches tall, branches slender, glabrous, usually drooping. Leaf blades ovate-elliptic, unlobed, 1-5 inches long. Flowers axillary, hanging; pedicels slender, to ca 6 inches long; epicalyx bracts 5-8, less than 0.1 inch long; calyx tubular, ca 0.75 inch long; petals strongly reflexed, 2-3 inches long, ± streaked red and pink, ruffled and deeply cut into many-lobed segments; staminal column slender, long-projecting, curved upward, anther-bearing on upper third. Fruit cylindrical, to 1.2 inches long, glabrous" (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 390).
"Very much like Hibiscus rosa-sinensis but the flowers pendulous, petals pink-and-white, deeply laciniate; staminal tube longer than petals" (Stone, 1970; p. 411).
Habitat/ecology: In Fiji, "cultivated near sea level and also in villages at higher elevations" (Smith, 1981; p. 420).
